Winter 2011
Coliban Relay Saturday 27th August
Well done to all the Harriers who made the trip up to Bendigo on saturday. It was a great day for racing, much better than the cold wet day we ran in last year. The club managed two womens teams and 6 mens teams, with a div 7 invite team also getting a run. We had mixed results across the teams and I expect the Griffo report is not far away.
AV Season Sandown 6th August
Saturday the 6th at Sandown presented us with a mix of results and success. Some of us had ideal conditions in which to run, while others had to endure the elements. For a change, the wind was not a factor in the effort to circumnavigate the racetrack.
Our Under 14 Boys achieved the best result, finishing second, and the 40+ Women recorded a third, but our efforts were concentrated on the Division 3 Men, who managed a fourth place to make them almost a certainty to retain their spot in the division for next winter. These relays are usually our Achilles Heel, costing us higher places than the individual races, but we have to be content with most of the results. Unfortunately, the Division 2 Women didn’t finish high enough to keep them in the race for promotion, nor did the Division 3 Women, but the Division 4 team is doing well but can’t go up unless the two Division 2 and 3 teams do so.
Despite our high numbers of registered runners this season, our Division 7 Men’s team has only managed to score twice. Saturday’s effort was by far the best. Even though the team was the last finisher, they earned 4 points for their ninth place. Nina Field lead off, followed by Dougie Guarneri having his first run for the club, then Teresa Barnes showing her determination to complete her two laps, and lastly but not least Griffo stepped out on the course to complete the team’s race. It may not have been pretty to watch but it was an inspiration to those of us who were left at the end. Griffo, on one leg and in the liquid sunshine, proved that it’s not raw talent but true grit which makes this club tick. However, we could still do with some more raw talent.
Sat 13th August: The Club, 5 Mile Cross Country Championship
The biggest race of the season was a great success. Congratulations to Patrick and Susan for taking the titles for another year. Together with our guests from St Stephen’s Harriers and Richmond Harriers we had over 60 runners take part in the two events.
