Steve GRIFFITHS

Steve joined the Club in mid 1963. He had organised a team from University High School to participate in the Schoolboys Cross-Country Championships run by Collingwood Harriers. These events were conducted for some years, mainly as a recruiting exercise.

Although seven years had elapsed, it is fair to say that his interest in athletics was born during the Melbourne Olympics.

In just Steve’s second year at the Club he was proud to be part of the Club’s first junior Premiership, when the under 17s won the Olympic Park group title before defeating Sandringham and Coburg in the Association Final. The mostly unchanged team was able to repeat the feat the next year again winning the Gordon Thompson Trophy for the Sub Junior title.

Steve has competed through summer and winter ever since with a just few years break in the eighties.

He has filled a number of positions with the Club, including Secretary, Social Secretary, Magpie (Club Magazine) Editor, V.A.A.A. Delegate and more recently President.

Steve was awarded Life Membership in 1984 and was honoured with the Norm Francisco Medal in 2013.
